Adding GPS to Your Car

Knowing Whether To Get Car GPS

Getting a car GPS system was at one time a luxury.  Few people could afford the thousands of dollars to purchase the system and the monthly fee that came with it.  Current GPS systems come with new features these older systems did not have, however.  They have maps and voice directions, which make the GPS system a good choice for anyone who has trouble reading a map.  An automotive GPS system also works well for people who frequently travel alone, or who travel to unknown places frequently.  For the average driver, though, a full GPS system may not be necessary; some portable models offer only a few directions and map areas, which works well if you don’t venture far from home.

Choosing A GPS System

Several key components are involved when selecting a car GPS system.  The first is whether you want a permanently mounted system.  If you will be using the system solely in one car, then opt for a mobile unit.  These units are simple to install, and you can move them to a different vehicle in only a few minutes’ time.  They are less sturdy, but better for moving.

The second major issue when choosing a car GPS system is whether you want something you can plug into your phone or other mobile device, or whether you want a dashboard system.  The in-dash systems, sold with certain models of cars, are still popular among some people, as well.

The final consideration is your visibility.  Color monitors have become fairly standard, and they allow you to see the system at night because the monitor will light up.  You also should look at auto GPS systems’ monitors, and check out which type of map works best for you.  Some people want something similar to a road map, while others prefer a street-level view.

Selecting GPS Features

Understanding how GPS works is important in deciding which features you want.  The basic concept is that you are loading a computer into your car.  This computer is connected to websites displaying information, or you are using an information card, such as an SD card, to load maps and other information onto the computer.  The price, which can range from $200 for a basic model to several thousand for the full-feature choices, depends in part on the mapped area you want.  People who travel mostly in the same region may opt for just that area and upgrade as needed by purchasing maps for areas they are visiting.  Frequent travelers, though, probably want to purchase a fully mapped system in the beginning.

Other features include the voice directions.  Almost all GPS systems have them, but some are beginning to offer street names instead of distances to turns.  Satellite radio companies are now partnering with GPS makers to offer satellite radio options for a monthly fee but as part of one unit.  Another really useful feature in auto GPS systems is downloadable information about hospitals, restaurants, and other points of interest.  These features add up quickly and increase the cost of the GPS system, but they make travel much easier.  Comparison shop before you buy at a site such as CNet, which offers a wide array of GPS system brands and models (http://shopper.cnet.com/2001-3490_9-0.html).

Installing A GPS System

Once you have your GPS system, you have the issue of installing it.  Complicated systems really may require a professional to install it.  If you want to do it yourself, though, think through the placement of the display screen and the antennae before you start mounting anything.  This video from CNet (http://reviews.cnet.com/4520-10895_7-6262887-2.html) offers a good visual explanation of how to decide where to put your GPS system.

A good rule of thumb is to get into the driver’s seat of the car.  Simulate driving as best you can, and think about what will allow you to be comfortable.  You want to be able to see the screen easily without needing to bend over to see it.  Make sure you can tilt your head to see the maps.  Once you have identified a good spot for your car GPS, you can prepare to mount the system there.

The antennae location is vital to getting good reception.  Make sure it is located on the top of your car and will have a clear path to connect with the monitor system.  The GPS system is basically a type of computer, but if you opted for a system with continual updates or with satellite radio capabilities, then the antennae needs the best location possible.  Putting it on top of the cab of trucks, for example, is much better than on the hood where there is more chance of obstruction.  Before permanently mounting the antennae, make sure you try out the system with it in various test spots.
